The Globe and Mail has recently announced that a local company with headquarters in Sherwood Park has been ranked one of the Top 50 Best Small and Medium Employers in Canada.
Stewart Weir & Co. Ltd. was ranked 21st in the Nationwide, prestigious competition undertaken by the University of Kingston’s, Queen’s School of Business.
Since moving to Sherwood Park in 2006, the Company has seen its staff complement grow from 150 to over 300. Today the consulting company provides engineering, surveying and mapping services to clients including municipal, industrial and large corporations throughout Alberta.
The Company’s success can be directly attributed to building a work environment that recognizes the need for a balance between challenging and rewarding employment and a friendly and “family like” work atmosphere. “We believe we can do better than just provide benefits and retirement programs to compensate and retain staff”, says Ron McGaffin, CEO. “Today you have to engage your personnel, respect them and give them an incentive to do a great job.” He goes on to say “the Sherwood Park community has also played a role in our success through the facilities at Millennium Place and the activities of the Chamber of Commerce.”
Looking ahead, the Company is expecting to continue its’ growth as it approaches its 100th Anniversary in 2012. The learnings from the award ranking process will be utilized to further enhance the Company’s work environment, which will directly impact their ability to meet their growth goals and more importantly provide a rewarding and meaningful career for all their staff.
