Our challenge was to enable our client to visualise sites for a proposed sports facility in Hamilton. We utilised geodesign principles to create a three dimensional realistic surrounding environment, which included the University of Waikato.
After a previous project identified four potential sites for the proposed indoor sports facility, we used site assessment criteria to prioritise sites by accessibility, transportation links and other measures.
To help visualise that environment, we created a 3D urban scene using ArcGIS and CityEngine, creating a 3D neighbourhood of existing buildings and trees.
LiDAR data was then used to analyse and allocate building heights, tree canopy radius and crown heights while imagery was used to classify building roof styles.
These attributes are then used by CityEngine’s procedural rules to produce a neutral realistic built and natural environment.
We transformed 2D geospatial data into 3D visualisations to provide a quick and iterative method of designing and sharing proposed developments within an existing urban setting. CityEngine’s automated 3D massing technology allows large urban scenes to be created efficiently and at low cost and to a level of detail that is appropriate for conceptual planning.
