Bringing the community together in the heart of a park.
Located in Manurewa, Auckland, Randwick Park’s transformation provides social and recreational benefits for its multi-cultural community, and includes a new multi-use pavilion.
The Randwick Park masterplan encompasses a community pavilion building and a range of recreational facilities including sports fields, netball courts, a children’s playground, a skate park and visitor carparks.
The pavilion provides a focal point for the community in the heart of the park and, as part of the wider masterplan, is acting as a catalyst to bring the community together.
WSP Opus Architecture was commissioned by Auckland Council to lead a multi-disciplinary team to design the new Randwick Park multi-use pavilion. Our team assisted Auckland Council in a rigorous community consultation process which allowed the design team to gain a clear understanding of the community’s needs and wants.
The pavilion provides a series of flexible, multi-purpose spaces arranged around a central open-plan communal kitchen. The servery and gathering space connects both the interior and exterior social areas. The entrance forecourt and northern plaza provides landscaped external activity zones for large gatherings and events.
Having been designed with the community’s input, it will be a well-used and enjoyed space once complete, suitable for a range of community purposes.
Key features – sustainability
A number of sustainability initiatives have been incorporated into the design, including:
- Specification of energy efficient materials and lighting systems.
- Orientation of the social spaces to maximise natural light and ventilation, reducing the need for heating and ventilation systems.
- Insulation of building envelope.
- Selection of environmentally friendly and sustainable building materials and finishes.
